Behind the Shot:
A Little League Moment with Big League Energy
Memorial Day was just yesterday, and like a lot of us, I spent part of today thinking back, not just on the meaning of the holiday, but on moments that remind me why I do what I do. One that keeps coming back is a baseball shoot from a couple summers ago featuring a kid with Big League attitude and a Little League jersey, Kingston "Nuggs". Nuggs brought more energy and swagger to the field than most grown players I’ve seen. This post is a breakdown of one frame from that shoot, a moment that perfectly captured his fire, his joy, and everything I love about photographing young athletes.
Every sportrait tells a story. Sometimes it's about intensity, sometimes it's
about personality, but it's always about capturing the athlete as they are in that moment. For this
session, I worked with a young Little League player who splits his time between the pitcher's mound
and behind the plate. That versatility alone gave us a great starting point.
The Vision:
I wanted to show both sides of this athlete, his focus as a pitcher and his grit as a catcher. But
more than that, I wanted to create an image that made him feel like a star in his own world. That's
what sportraits are about: showing athletes, no matter their age, in a way that reflects how big
their passion really is.
The Setup:
We shot in the early afternoon, right around 2 p.m., under the intense July sun. I used that
sunlight as a rim light to create separation and drama, letting it hit from behind and to the side.
Up front, I used just enough fill to balance the shadows and bring out his expression. He wore full
catcher's gear, mask on, and stood ready like the game was about to begin.
The Moment:
With the mask on and a serious look in his eyes, he locked onto the camera, no smile, just that
focused intensity that every catcher knows. That was the shot. No posing. No pretending. Just a
real athlete in his element.
Why It Works:
What made this image special wasn't the gear or the time of day it was the authenticity. He was
just a kid playing ball, but in that moment, he looked every bit the part of a pro. That's the magic of
a great sportrait. It doesn't just show what you do-it captures who you are.
